I created this tutorial video to help train our new hire in quest scripting. I also wrote documentation here: docs.google.com/document/d/1VB9OIAwk_BQJRl1GR338kXyk2QLTZn7aWQdZDLGnM-4/edit?usp=sharing After creating these materials, it occurred to me they might be useful for anyone else who needs to design a quest framework on their own game, so I've decided to make them public. 1:09 - writing qu...

Eastshade Game Development Time Lapse
That sounds awesome. I’m always really stressed by Stardew Valley because I can’t fit everything into the day.
Oh, I love those Devlogs so much. I know it's a marketing mechanic, but it really works. I feel deeply invested in that game and the philosophy that goes behind it. Thank you so much for speaking up about the "time management game", a phrase that describes farm games way better than "farm". I think a lot of these games are about the productivity systems - they force us to do as much as we can in the shortest amount possible/with the least resources we have provided in the game. They always start to stress me mid-games because there is just SO MUCH to keep in mind all the freaking time. And then I end up watching youtube videos about how to squeeze every possible cent out of every second so that I "don't waste time". I really don't think they fit under the "cozy" blanket anymore. As much as I got bored of Animal Crossing, the idea that there was only so much you can do in a day was absolutely freeing. Stardew really feels like I'm a project manager, and every time i want to do something different, I need to watch the clock, watch the resources, watch the time schedule. One mistake and you're DONE. It's exhausting.
i need to remind myself to never talk about why i think i am so unique and good for multiple minutes lol. you can be confident, and it's smart to think about what makes your stuff good, and it's fine to have something prepared if someone asks you. if you want it to be a subject in your video, put it in a context. Like what you would hypothetically respond to a publisher or so. but in this case, nobody asked and you just attack us with narcissistic rambling. you don't need to talk about how good you are. i only want to read that in other people's reviews anyway. for me it's only subtracting value because it's hard to sit through the bragging in a video like this. the game's art looks incredible. i'm very interested in what you have to say. i remember learning a lot from previous videos. but please humble yourself a bit. and don't be fake humble by saying something to try and compensate for the endless bragging you did a minute before. just don't brag in the first place. it's like walking into the middle of the room to start farting unapologetically, then take deep breaths through the nose and start describing the smell to everyone. there's nothing you can say to recover from that.
Game has many cool idea. I really like how you design about time in game.
11:40 man you're making me cry out here. so happy for you guys.
Its not even a game. Lucky you that people have lost completely the respect for the value of money and me you a millionaire with this .....
Great devlog, I'm now even more hyped, because what you said resonates with my soul so perfectly, and, you're right, not every game can do or even try to do so ❤
This game looks incredible 🙌
I'm someone working on my own game with a focus on replayability and dynamic progression, and I'm wondering if there is a strategic gameplay flowing aspect or game system of Glimmerwick planned for endless play? For example, Stardew Valley allows me to strategize time and activity for farm optimization, but I can endlessly play on my farm for as long as I want to. Simply put that I want to spend as much time in your world, and not feel compelled to put down the game after finishing the story.
Thanks for a great devlog series. The Q&A section has definitely brought a nice style to these videos that I don't see elsewhere. Q: How do you know when to invent a new mechanic or system, and when to use an existing industry standard approach? It seems like it's really important to know how games work (best practices and design patterns), but studying other games tends to fill one's head with other people's ideas. Do you avoid studying other people's games for inspiration?
Thanks for watching! Glad to hear you like the format! That's a fantastic question! Will definitely try to cover that if I can!
Now this is some professional advice, a rarity in youtube. Instant Subscribe!
i adore the artstyle!!
This video is a complete lie. You can track Steam stats. They're public. Your all-time peak players was 431. It's very likely lower on consoles. You did not make millions by building a walking simulator with the default character classes and marketplace photogrammetry assets. Which is exactly what this is. You can do this math in elementary school. There are tons of bot comments on this video. This is a shady marketing ploy to drive up sales.
That is some smarmy conviction you have for being so wrong! But I'm going to be nice. First of all peak concurrent players is not a good way to estimate revenue. Review count * 50 gives a reasonable approximation of units sold. And fyi millions is NOT a high benchmark. There are probably a thousand games you've never heard of that grossed over a million. And turns out a few hundred peak players is more than enough to gross a mil. Games make way more than you think they do apparently. At the moment you have absolutely no idea how much games make, or how to calculate it. It's trivial to find though. Google "steam revenue estimator" and maybe you can learn something. Apparently your elementary school math isn't cutting it.
Rather than start/stop time. You could slow down and speed up time gradually. Upcoming event? Slow down time until they make it to the event. After the event speed back up gradually to game time
I honestly needed this brutally honest video. ( also considering the fact that my first game only made 24 € I never even received :,) )
loved the art and vibe of the game! is it 3d with 2d sprites or fully 2d?
Thank you! Devlog #2 might be interesting to you! ua-cam.com/video/N22YYcu5JE4/v-deo.html
watching it right now! 🥰
Great job! It really seems you've solved a major issue in these type of games. I'm eagerly waiting for the release of Glimmerwick :)
Eastshade is one of my favourite games but I would be hard pressed to explain why so it's really interesting to hear you discusss some of the design reasons that contribute to this. More and more excited for Glimmerwick and still loving these vids. Have you had much fun or any interest at all with creating any Easter eggs in Glimmerwick?
The music in these videos is so beautiful... Is it/will it be on spotify?
This game and Eastshade is so inspiring for me as an indie dev - Such wonderful and high quality games made by "just" a few people! I've been working on my game for 2 years now and it's not anywhere near complete, yet I am not deterred because of stories like yours <3
Thank you so much for the kind words! And best of luck on your own gamedev journey!
It just looks so good oh my god......
Thank you so much! <3
this game looks so good! I really can't wait to play it ♥
Superb! THank you for sharing the progress! Excuse ne, I need to ask again, why you do not use Unity 2023 with URDP?
We only update for specific reasons, and there has been nothing we need in the new versions. Chasing new versions just for the sake of it costs tens of thousands of dev dollars in maintenance and regression bugs. Most serious commercial productions don't update mid dev cycle.
I am in awe of your game design solutions. I am learning slowly and hope to approach solutions with as much tact and grace as you all do eventually
You're too kind! Thank you for watching and for the kind words!
I was just thinking the other day when the next devlog would be available. And here it is! I like the day/night cycle existing and still having the day continue indefinitely at night. It makes me thinking of pulling an all-nighter in college. I wonder how many mysteries there will be in the game to uncover. Also, although there will be no combat, will there be any conflict? Perhaps relationships not going well, or two parties wanting different and opposing goals.
Haha what a coincidence! And of course! The world is filled with characters, stories, and conflict! We use conflict as a narrative building block like any storied media might.
Waiting for eastshade 3 😅
I love seeing the game come along! So excited for the eventual release! You've mentioned combat as a common foundational mechanic that you're not using. Are there other game mechanics that you've treated similarly? (Economy/budgeting is a common mechanic that comes to mind) Or some mechanics that you're including that haven't been used as much in other games? (Like the way you're approaching the day-cycle time crunch)
🎉 Let’s go EASTSHADE! So excited for this game… I just might play it on stream 😁😇
Ahhh new upload yesss!! I can’t wait to cozy up and watch this when I get home 😆😄😁
I bloody adore this series !! 😍🥰
First
Wait a second, all I need as an indie dev is savings and support from family to last me 5 years and a loving supporting wife that comes up with the core ideas for my game? Idk how I never thought of it!
Are your skills in your discipline absolutely top level? Are you a highly sought after game programmer or artist, with quality shipped experience in a gamedev pipeline? If not then you could have all the support in the world and I promise it won't help you much!
i work as a game Developer and Designer, i'm better as a Designer that means i should look for a Developer wife ... got it
lol I'd look to improve your developer skills to industry leading levels and then look for an artist wife. Pure designers have very little use in teams of two.
Thank you for sharing your story. We are struggling 5 man team, and success story like yours gets us going. I appreciate it!
Cheers! Thanks for watching and best of luck to you!
My wife!

Nice work! I stretched my savings and was able to buy 2 coffees ;)

Awesome and so healing for me ✨✨
how is this not marketing tbh
Producing a title that competes with the top of your genre is a production problem, not a marketing problem. And production is the bottleneck for 99% of indies. Market research can't magically make your production value, scope, or game quality go up. But at least it can show you where the benchmark is.
0:52 no, thats not true. quality doesn't matter, its all about marketing and being at the right place. People when they go steam, see what is most downloaded game and play that
Probably not the first to ask this but, this game, once VR is accessable and better, might just be perfect for it
Step 1) Have a supportive grandma and girlfriend. Welp.. gg.
Well if you're talking about my story, step 1 is actually build your skills to industry leading levels and get hired by a triple-A studio and start stacking years of experience. You can get started on that without the grandma or girlfriend.
Millions? How?
I challenge you to make a couch coop game in similar vibes ❤ I'll do it, eventually ;p But seriously, do it xD Great inspiration pice Pie is the key
Now that's quite a journey
Nicely done. I am jealous. I did look at your steam page and what jumped out at me was people complaining about bugs. Will they ever be addressed? Maybe the problem is too difficult to solve.
In hindsight, you should probably reassess your choice of vehicles. If you live where it snows 1ft in a day... own a vehicle that can drive through 1ft without issues. I'm not joking... it's not a problem.
lol okay I'll buy a tank to be prepared for THE WORST SNOWSTORM IN A HUNDRED YEARS (like I mentioned in the video :) )
marketing is a AAA trap. really good game will be popular regarless of marketing. and with social media these day, maketting is as easy as making a youtube short video goes viral
